Luís Carvalho

Clarinetist, conductor and composer, Luís Carvalho (n.1974) is regarded as one of the most versatile Portuguese musicians of his generation. He studied clarinet and composition in Porto with António Saiote and Fernando Lapa, respectively, and holds a PhD in Music from the University of Aveiro. Further studies abroad with Michel Arrignon, Jacques di Donato, Walter Boyeckens and Alain Damiens (clarinet), workshops and lectures with Magnus Lindberg and Luis de Pablo (composition). In Milan, St. Petersburg, and Madrid he studied orchestra conducting with Jorma Panula and Jesus López-Cóbos, having also completed a postgraduate degree in contemporary music conducting, with Arturo Tamayo at the University of Alacalá de Henares (Madrid). Mr. Carvalho has been awarded the Prize for the Best Student of the Year (1994) by ESMAE-IPP (Porto), a semi-finalist at the International Dos Hermanas Clarinet Competition in Seville (Spain-1995) and won of the Chamber Music Prize of the Portuguese Jeunesses Musicales (1995), the Helena de Sá e Costa Competition (ESMAE-1997), and the Estoril Competition for soloists (2001). He joined the Portuguese Youth Orchestra [OPJ] from 1991, the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra (France) from 1996, and the Filarmonia das Beiras (Aveiro) as solo clarinet (1997-2007). His recitals and solo concerts took him around Europe, North Africa, Middle East, South America, and Asia, with notable appearings in the EUROCASS-European Congress of Clarinet and Saxophone (Budapest-1997), the CLARMEETOPORTO-International Congress of Clarinet of Porto (1999/2001/2003) and new edition ClarMeet.Porto (2015/2016), as well as at the ClarinetFest-ICA, World Congress of Clarinet (Porto-2009 and Madrid-2015). He also toured the state of Espírito Santo (Brazil-2013), with concerts in Vitória (Teatro Carlos Gomes) and the Winter Festival of Domingos Martins, with a Camerata Nov'Arte, a group for which he is artistic and musical director. Of his concerts the critic wrote: «he sings with a round and robust sound, a formidable technique and a convincing musicality» (James Gillespie in The Clarinet magazine), while considering him «one of the most complete Portuguese clarinetists» (Fernando C. Lapa in Público newspaper). Has a conductor Mr. Carvalho appears regularly with the major Portuguese and foreign orchestras, and his compositions are often performed in Portugal and abroad (Spain, France, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Holland, Venezuela, and Brazil). Mr. Carvalho is featured in nearly two dozen CDs, as either a clarinetist, conductor, or composer, on such labels as NUMÉRICA, CASA DA MÚSICA, AFINAUDIO, MOLENAAR or PUBLIC ART. He teaches on the faculty of the Aveiro University.
